One of the science fiction novels I've wanted to write involves a major, worldwide technology company that engineered and sells a complete system for ultra-vivid virtual reality. The company that makes all this hardware and software is Simulsens. One of their products, branded as Sensarena, provides a shared virtual experience for groups of people. Buy a commercially available Sensarena server machine and host your own groups. Or let Simulsens manage your event on their vast network of Sensarena servers, which are available for reservation. This rendering shows one of the control hubs for this network, collectively known as the Sensarena Central Cloud.

This image is a composite of several renders completed in order to carry off the vision I had for this project. I created the composite to provide the background for an ad I designed for the fictional company SimulSens. A young man is jacked into his Simulsens Flyjack deck and unwinding. The Flyjack deck runs on the Continuum operating system, whose main function is to run various programs that present simulated reality.

This image is a composite of a few renders completed to create the background for an ad from the fictional company SimulSens. The product advertised is Realia, which is overlays your sensory awareness of the real world with an additional simulated reality. The overlapping realities are fuzed an reconxiled as part of processing normal sensory stimulation. A successful young business woman strolls briskly toward an appointment, her Realia gear presenting her with private data feeds only she can see and then use for competitive advantage.

This image is a composite of a few renders completed to create the background for an ad from the fictional company SimulSens. The product Continuum, which is the operating system that provides the basic playback and content management functions as well as synthesizing signals to produce the full sensory experience of a simulated reality. A technician goes about his day, wholly unconcerned about the reliable operation of his portable Flyjack deck thanks to Continuum's fast, precise design.

This image is a composite of a few renders completed to create the background for an ad from the fictional company SimulSens. The products are two different types of neural interfaces, which pass and process data between the person wearing the interface and the simulated reality running on a Flyjack deck to create an experience nearly nobody can reliably distinguish from real. A traveler makes her way through a main corridor on Unity Station, high in orbit around Earth. Her neural interface is able to present a customized user experience when accessing various sites and online data streams as she reviews the latest info on available flights from her location.

Activity high above a domed city, perhaps on another world being terraformed for human colonization. Inside the dome is a modern urban living environment, complete with parks and a pond. Outside the dome, harsh desert conditions keep paradise bottled inside for now.
Completed September 9, 2006
A location from a science fiction novel I've carried in my head for years now. This retreat belongs to a prince in an imperial family that governs an interstellar assembly of worlds. In fact, the entire planet is the personal dominion of this prince. But it also serves as the headquarters of a secret group to which the prince is a member and major supporter.
Completed August 25, 2006
A vision of the future in which humans work alongside intelligent beings of other species in the exploration of new worlds. In this particular case, a hovercraft is making its way from an offshore base on a mainly oceanic world toward the shoreline some distance away to conduct survey work.
Completed November 15, 2005
A morning conversation between two members of an expedition to Mars. A new exploration rig has been assembled from components sent from Earth. With this new machine, the expedition will be able to travel much farther with a greater field of vision than other vehicles used previously. One man, perhaps the lead of the engineering team, shows off the handiwork to one of his mates.
Completed November 8, 2005
A pair of passengers getting ready to start their morning commute. The garage doors ahead of them have opened as they prepare to shut the cockpit of their air car and fly off to whatever they have scheduled for that particular day.
Completed September 5, 2005
A room inside a stasis facility where the wealthy keep genetically perfected copies of themselves in storage. When they require a new clone to inhabit or to harvest for replacement organs, they remove this template from its coma long enough to produce the new copy.
Completed February 3, 2003
John Gatson, captain of the S.S. Prospero, walks onto the bridge of the ship under his command for the first time. This image is part of a series of renderings from a spacecraft and crew that I'd like to develop visual stories around, either as animation or as graphic short stories. The Prospero is a lightspeed-capable ship that carries a crew on missions of exploration around the solar system.
Completed February 4, 2003
The bridge as the S.S. Prospero approaches orbit around Mars. This image is part of a series of renderings from a spacecraft and crew that I'd like to develop visual stories around, either as animation or as graphic short stories. The Prospero is a lightspeed-capable ship that carries a crew on missions of exploration around the solar system.
Completed January 23, 2003
The officers and places of the S.S. Prospero. Here is Sean Baker, chief Helm officer, trying to shake off the last cobwebs of a good night's sleep. The officers of the Prospero share 2 person cabins, half of which we see in this image.
Completed December 13, 2002
The S.S. Prospero has finished the first day of her maiden voyage. The initial tests of the lightspeed engines were very successful. And now, John Gatson, captain of the Prospero, is retiring for the night. But he arrives at the cabin he shares with Carlos Solana with a modest bit of celebration on his mind. Number 7 is doing a little butler duty before going about the nightly chores.
Completed December 10, 2002
Robot Number 9 helps Carlos Solana as he boards the S.S. Prospero for the first time. Mr. Solana is a specialist in planetary geology and first officer aboard the Prospero. The ship belongs to the Solgate Institute, a private research foundation dedicated to planetary and interstellar exploration. Number 9 is one of three robots serving aboard the Prospero. Among the many tasks these helpers can perform is lifting heavy containers using magnetic clamps in their hands.
Completed December 8, 2002
Someday, we may discover that the ultimate harvest gathered from the worship of DNA is the loss of our humanity. Here, a man of means has found a way to rapidly clone copies of himself from a template kept in stasis. Whenever he needs vital organs, he just runs another copy off the human copier and he's good to go.
Completed December 3, 2002
This image is a reworking of one of my earliest works, hence the redux. I preserved a number of elements found in the original version, from a row of plants around the bubble's edge to a robotic gardener outside watering.
Completed October 30, 2002
On a secluded and mainly unspoiled planet we find a private retreat for those who can afford the utmost in getting away from it all. A trio of guests at this estate are taking to the skies on rocketbikes. Nothing to tickle a thrillseeker like the adlib ride on a rollercoaster without any kind of track.
Completed November 11, 2002
A space craft arrives at a port of call, perhaps a home base. The outer docking doors have opened as strobe lights guide the vessel into the tunnel and toward a berth waiting within.
Completed November 29, 2000
This image shows a small habitat in space, perhaps somewhere in our own solar system. It's moving day as cargo ships come and go, delivering the belongings of new inhabitants. This habitat is an ultimate expression to imagine a dream home. If you're going to dream, why not dream big?
Completed September 12, 1998
I thought it would be funny to have a shot much like this picture in an animation. The pilot of this yacht is in a big rush to get home. The craft detours too near an asteroid field and our intrepid pilot must pulverize the obstacles with the ship's forward weapons.
A small convoy of courier ships from a distant world just arrived in orbit high above the Earth. Their mission, as they fly toward the night side of the planet, is to inform the people of Earth that there are intelligent beings on thousands of worlds throughout the galaxy.
Completed November 26, 1999
The station is somewhere in the Midtown or Buckhead areas of Atlanta in the summer of 2048. If you've ever taken public transit in Atlanta, you probably know that each of the MARTA train stations has a unique visual style. This is my view of a future rail line.
Completed January 25, 1998
An interstellar spacecraft returns from some distant star. The ship crosses the great distances between stars by punching through the fabric of space-time as we know it to some layer nearby where the laws of nature accommodate faster travel. When the ship reaches its destination, it punches a hole again to return to normal space. Here the ship is emerging through the tear to rejoin the world.
Completed November 14, 1999
A hover car now caught in the intersection is speeding through a traffic signal changing from caution to stop. But the nature of the traffic signal itself has also changed as technology provided new ways to invent traditional elements of life.
Completed November 12, 1999
A humble expanse of natural landscape amid an ocean of metal plating, ducts, and girders. It is as if nature has become the refugee instead of being a refuge. The landscape, particularly the riverbed, was generated from a fractal.
Completed November 15, 1999
The powers and efforts of law enforcement agencies manage to finally clean up our streets. All the homeless people and vagrant people and panhandlers and others who might be a nuisance to the decent taxpaying voters have all been swept away. Of course, by the time the job was finished, there are very few people left to enjoy the sanitized plaza.
Completed November 11, 1999
I will say that Nirvana 3833 can be a much more pleasant place than it looks. A truly guilded cage in which fail bodies living out their retirement years can once more experience youthful vigor in a networked simulation of reality.
Completed November 12, 1998
Using photos and other bitmaps from a NASA/JPL web site, I decided to create this image showing a combined visual/tactical display from one of a convoy of spaceships. They're headed toward Earth orbit from just past Mars.
Completed May 18, 1998
What we see through the arch is the inside of a domed area. The corridor in which the viewer seems to stand is one that rings the outer edge of this dome. I want to incorporate this idea into a video where the camera goes on a snowmobiling jaunt. In the end we see that the whole domed snow arena is one of those holiday globes you shake to swirl the fake snow inside.
